On March 14th, Bingren Shao, the former deputy director of the People's Republic of China State Commission for Restructuring the Economic System, counselor of Chinese Calligraphers Association and senior advisor of Shenzhen Innovation Development Institute joined the Public Lecture Series of the SZIDI, and delivered a speech on what kind of officials and citizens are popular---traditional culture, behavior and officials, with Chairman of SZIDI, Siping Zhang addressing the welcome note. .

Main points of the speech:

The extensive and profound traditional culture comprises a variety of areas from ideology, politics, technology, technique, and culture. However, it is the ideology that represents the core of Chinese traditional culture. Confucianism being the core, together with Legalism, Taoism and Mohism, constitute the primaries in the ideological aspect of today’s Chinese traditional culture.

We shouldn't complain that the reform has caused and widened the gap between the rich and the poor as among those different reasons, the reform is not the dominating one. It is the stagnation and even the reverse of the reform process that prevented us from moving forward on the reform in social security and income distribution. Thus, the gap has been aggravated. We all know this because we are involved in the reform.

Interests are the prerequisite of positions. To be honest, the reform launched by Deng Xiaoping provides us, the ordinary people, with opportunities to make contributions to our country. So it is not exaggerated to say we should always have deep gratitude to Deng Xiaoping. I love to come to Shenzhen, the core city of South Tour Speeches delivered by Deng Xiaoping. Without him, Shenzhen would not have such ground-shaking development.

Hardships can neither be a show-off story upon success, nor become an excuse for stepping back. No one wants to suffer from difficulties in that to be the pursuit of happiness is the human nature. At the same time, learning lessons from the past hardships will help us to chart out a bright future. This is not only the right value for an individual, but also for a country and a nation.

Everyone wants to realize their dreams. But I think the value we hold should be to associate one’s personal aspirations with the prosperity and fate of their country and nation. Just as Fan Zhongyan puts it, be first to show concerns and worries, and be last to enjoy pleasure. Lin Zexu also puts it, be in line with the conviction that I will do whatever it takes to serve my country even at the cost of my own life, regardless of fortune or misfortune to myself.

So a competent politician or a leader dares to make suggestions to their superiors, and is willing to take good advice.

In addition, a man should improve his inner quality by having good temperament bred from one’s cultural deposits. As an old saying puts it, a great learning makes a natural flow of good temperament. Thus no matter who you are, a leader or an entrepreneur, should improve the inner quality by learning traditional culture. Put it in mind to make friends with the nobles rather than the so-called fair-weather friends.

In a word, a qualified official is uncorrupted, responsible and dedicated to serve for the people with heart and soul. It was also written in The Analects of Confucius that a man pursuing success should have virtues, benevolence and a good knowledge of different skills. This illustrates the basics of a good man. If you behave according to this principle, you will be a good man, a qualified man and a respected man with a smooth and happy life.
